Why it happened, in plain English

The filed reason is precise: the label “does not declare walnuts in English.” The products contain black walnut hull, listed by its botanical name, Juglans nigra. Under US allergen labeling rules, tree nuts must be declared by their common English name. A Latin binomial is not an allergen declaration, even when it is accurate.

The recall is Class II, which FDA uses when exposure may cause temporary or medically reversible harm. Tree-nut allergy is the reason it is not Class III.

Who else should care

Every herbal and botanical brand that lists ingredients by botanical name, which is most of them. The pattern repeats across the category: an ingredient that is also a major allergen (walnut, almond, soy, wheat grass is not one but wheat is) hidden inside a Latin name.

Check: your ingredient list against the nine major allergens, looking at what the botanical is, not what it is called. Juglans nigra is a walnut.
