Why it happened, in plain English
The filed reason is “Potential contamination with Salmonella.” The record does not say what tested positive or where the concern came from. What it does show is that eight of the ten product descriptions single out one ingredient, nonfat dry milk, and that these are 48 oz to 30 lb foodservice packs, the kind that sit open behind a coffee bar for weeks.
In general terms, a cocoa or frappe mix is a dry blend of sugar, cocoa, milk powder and flavors with no kill step after mixing. If any dry ingredient arrives contaminated, the blend is contaminated, and Salmonella survives in low-moisture powders for months. The control that matters is supplier verification for every dry dairy input, and the ability to trace one ingredient lot into every SKU it went into. Ten SKUs and 3,102 cases went out under this recall, to 27 states and to Canada, Guatemala, Japan, the Philippines, the UK and South Korea.
Who else should care
Coffee shops, cafes and foodservice distributors that stock these mixes should check their shelves; the recall is still listed as ongoing. Beyond that, any blender of dry beverage mixes, hot cocoa, protein shakes, chai and coffee-house powders that buys milk powder as an ingredient.
Check: whether you can list every SKU that used a given lot of milk powder, and whether that list matches what actually shipped, including export orders.
