Why it happened, in plain English
The filed reason is “potential undeclared allergen ingredient (Wheat).” The word “potential” matters: the firm is not saying wheat was confirmed in the product, only that it may be present and the label does not declare it. The record does not say which ingredient in either formula was the concern. In general terms, asafoetida, the hing in Hingwastika, is commonly compounded with wheat flour as a carrier. We note that as a general fact about the ingredient class, not as a finding in this record.
Forty-five units is one of the smallest quantities we have seen in a Class I. The classification tracks the hazard, not the volume. Two SKUs, two recall numbers, and an online-only sales channel, which means the customer list is the notification list.
Who else should care
Importers and small brands selling traditional herbal formulas, Ayurvedic, Chinese or otherwise, where a named botanical is actually a compounded ingredient with a carrier or excipient. The allergen may not be in the herb; it may be in what the herb was processed with.
Online-only supplement sellers should also note that “sold primarily online” means the firm holds the customer records, and FDA expects them used. Check: whether every botanical ingredient’s spec sheet states its carriers and processing aids, and whether any of them are major allergens.
