Why it happened, in plain English

The enforcement record gives the reason as potential E. coli and Salmonella contamination and the lot as ISS Lot # SAL2-24JB. FDA’s outbreak page (updated September 15, 2026) states that alfalfa sprouts grown by Everything Sprouts, LLC of Minneapolis are one of the sources of illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella, that FDA’s traceback identified at least one additional sprout grower who received and used the same seed lot, and that the seed supplier to Everything Sprouts agreed to initiate a recall of the lot. CDC (September 1): 55 ill, 4 hospitalized, no deaths, 15 states.

Everything Sprouts recalled alfalfa sprouts on August 22 (lots 222, 223, 225, 226, 230; Minnesota and Wisconsin; sold May 27 to August 21) and Robust Radish Mix on August 28. Berlin Seeds of Millersburg, OH recalled alfalfa sprouting seed on September 23; its 5 lb and 50 lb bags carry lot code SAL2-24JB; sold February 13 to August 23 to customers in 44 states; Berlin Seeds reports one illness connected to the seed.

Who else should care

FDA’s instruction on the outbreak page: any sprout grower or distributor that received the recalled alfalfa seed lot should not use or distribute the seed or any sprouts grown from it. The enforcement record lists 16 states and four countries of wholesale distribution; the downstream recipients other than Everything Sprouts and Berlin Seeds are not named in the public record as of this writing.
