Why it happened, in plain English
The filed reason says the products “may be potentially contaminated with Salmonella.” It does not name a cause. The product list does the talking. Four are bulk blends in 10 to 50 lb bags under JCB’s own name: two ranch seasonings, a dill and garlic, a fiery hot. Three are retail packs under other names: Karlsburger Kitchens Garlic N Cheese Topper, Butler’s Pantry Popping Topping, and a White Cheddar Seasoning distributed by Fireworks Popcorn, a division of Jonco Industries.
That last item also appears in Jonco’s own recall, filed three days later, where the reason is California Dairies milk powder recalled for Salmonella. The record does not state that JCB’s products share that cause, and we do not assume it. What the file shows is the shape of a flavor-house recall: one blender, several brands, bulk and retail, four states. Dairy powders run through ranch, cheese and sour-cream seasonings, which is how one dry ingredient takes out a product family.
Who else should care
Snack brands that buy seasoning from a regional flavor house and put their own name on the shaker. Three of the seven products here carry a customer’s brand. Those customers are now in the recall whether their own plant touched the product or not. Bulk buyers of ranch and cheese seasoning for popcorn, chips and pretzels are in the same position.
Small flavor houses should read the quantity line, “50 lbs.,” against a seven-item product list, and ask whether their own records would let them describe the scope more precisely than that. Check: whether you can list every finished blend, every customer brand and every lot that received a given dairy-powder lot, before your supplier’s notice arrives.
