Why it happened, in plain English

The filed reason names the chain: “Products were made with recalled California Dairies milk powder due to Salmonella.” Jonco did not have a plant failure. Its Fireworks Popcorn division sells a gift set with three popcorns and three toppings, and the white cheddar topping was blended from a milk powder its supplier had already pulled. The same White Cheddar Seasoning, labeled for Fireworks Popcorn, also appears in a JCB Flavors recall filed three days earlier, which is where the file suggests it was blended.

A gift set is the awkward case in a cascade recall. The recalled component is one jar inside a box with five other items, and the consumer bought the box. Jonco pulled 1,407 jars across Wisconsin and Mississippi, and the recall is terminated. In general terms, the control for a brand in this position is the ability to trace a supplier’s lot number through a blender and into a kit, quickly, when the notice comes down.

Who else should care

Gift-set and kit assemblers, subscription-box packers, and popcorn or snack brands that buy seasoning blends from a flavor house. Your name is on the box, and the recall is filed in your name, even though the ingredient was three steps upstream. Milk powder is in more seasonings than most brand owners realize.

Small brands that buy blends from a regional flavor house should ask what dairy ingredients are in each blend and who supplies them. Check: whether you could, within a day, list every kit and every lot that contains a given supplier’s blend, using your own records rather than waiting for the blender to tell you.
