Why it happened, in plain English
The filed reason says it plainly: the products were made with jalapeños that may be contaminated. Whole Foods did not have a failure in its kitchens. It bought a fresh ingredient that had passed through an importer (Coast Citrus Distributors), at least one wholesaler, and possibly a repacker, and the contamination arrived with the pepper.
Fresh produce has no kill step in a raw salsa or guacamole. The only controls are supplier verification and traceability, and the record shows the second one worked: the products were identified and pulled within about two weeks of the importer’s recall.
Who else should care
Any retailer or food-service operation making fresh products in-house from wholesale produce. Ten SKUs were pulled here for one ingredient. If your recipes share a common fresh input, one upstream recall takes out all of them at once.
Check: your ability to map an ingredient lot to every finished product it went into, within a day. That is what turned this from an outbreak into a recall.
