Why it happened, in plain English

The filed reason is “undeclared hazelnut.” The label declares wheat, egg, milk and soy, and the product is a caramel-filled beignet. The record does not say where the hazelnut came from. In general terms, hazelnut in a bakery item with no hazelnut in the name points either to a filling or to a shared line, and the difference matters: a filling with hazelnut is a formulation and spec-sheet failure, while cross-contact is a sanitation and scheduling failure.

Costco is the recalling firm because Kirkland Signature is its label. The bakery that made the beignets is not named. That is the private-label cascade in the other direction from most recalls we cover: the retailer owns the recall and the supplier stays out of the record. The recall is terminated. With 24 states in the distribution line, that is a lot of warehouses for 8,073 packages.

Who else should care

Bakeries and confectioners supplying retailer private-label programs. When your customer’s name is on the clamshell, your allergen statement becomes their recall. Tree-nut fillings and spreads, hazelnut in particular, are the frequent culprit in filled pastries.

Retail quality teams should also treat a supplier’s label proof as a starting point, not a finished review. Check: whether the allergen statement on every filled bakery SKU has been matched line by line against the supplier’s current filling spec, not the spec from the original approval.

This firm's record

Costco filed a second Kirkland Signature bakery recall for undeclared hazelnut in April 2026: Traditional Madeleines, 92 units, with soy lecithin also undeclared, distributed in eight states and Puerto Rico. Two undeclared-hazelnut recalls on Kirkland Signature filled bakery items inside three months.
