Why it happened, in plain English
The filed reason: “Undeclared hazelnut and soy lecithin.” The product description explains the mechanism: a clamshell labeled “Traditional Madeleines” was “packed with 9 pieces of Filled Heart Madeleines.” The wrong product went into the right package. The label was accurate for what it was designed for and wrong for what was inside.
This is a packing-line error, not a formula error. The number is small, 92 units across nine states and Puerto Rico, which fits a short run or a single changeover. The control that failed is the one between products on a shared bakery packing line: the moment when the pack, the label and the product all have to match. The record names Costco as the recalling firm because the label says “Distributed by Costco Wholesale Corp,” but it does not name the bakery that packed it.
Who else should care
Bakeries and co-packers that run several filled and unfilled pastry variants on one line, and retailers whose private-label bakery items come from such lines. A hazelnut-filled product in a plain-labeled pack is a Class I allergen case every time, however few units are involved.
Check: whether your packing-line changeover includes a physical check of product against label at the start of each run, signed by someone other than the operator who set it up.
This firm's record
Costco’s second hazelnut recall this year. On January 31, 2026, the same firm recalled Kirkland Signature Mini Beignets filled with Caramel for undeclared hazelnut, also in a clear clamshell, also Class I. Two filled-pastry allergen errors in ten weeks, on similar packaging, is a pattern worth noting for any retailer relying on bakery suppliers to control their own lines.
