Why it happened, in plain English

The filed reason: the product “was made with milk powder recalled by the supplier due to Salmonella contamination.” The record does not name the supplier. The three products are 50 lb bags labeled “For Further Processing,” shipped to IL, TN and Canada. That means the flavors were not the end of the chain. They went into someone else’s snack seasoning, soup base or sauce mix, and those customers had to trace their own lots in turn.

This is the middle link of a cascade. A flavor house buys milk powder, blends it with cheese solids and other dry ingredients, and sells the blend to food manufacturers. There is no kill step at any point. When the dairy powder is recalled, every downstream product made from the flavor is exposed, and the flavor house cannot pull those products itself; it can only notify. The 45,000 lbs here is the flavor, not the finished goods. The record lists the recall as terminated.

Who else should care

Snack, soup, sauce and dip manufacturers that buy savory flavors in bulk from a flavor house. Your ingredient spec may say “natural cheese flavor” and never mention milk powder, but a dairy recall two steps up can still reach you. Distributors that resell flavors are in the same position.

Check: whether your flavor suppliers have told you, in writing, which of their products contain milk powder and who makes it, so you are not waiting for a phone call to find out.
